Sickle Cell Disease Awareness & Blood Donation Initiative

Sickle Cell Disease (SCD) is a hereditary blood disorder that disproportionately affects people of African, Caribbean, Middle Eastern, South Asian, and Mediterranean descent. Many patients rely on regular blood transfusions, yet Atlantic Canada faces a shortage of ethnically compatible donors.

In partnership with Canadian Blood Services, this initiative engages community, faith-based, and health organizations to increase awareness and encourage blood donation within African Nova Scotian, African, Caribbean, Black, and other racialized communities.

Our Objectives
  • Raise awareness about SCD and its impact.
  • Provide culturally informed education to dispel myths and address fears.
  • Register 800–1000 new donors through group donations and community mobile clinics.
Key Activities
  • Group Blood Donations: Reserved appointment blocks for donors supporting SCD patients.
  • Community Stories: Sharing lived experiences from patients and donors.
  • Community Blood Drives: Events across Atlantic Canada to register and engage new donors.
Expected Impact
  • Increased community awareness
  • Expanded donor base (800–1000 new donors)
  • Stronger partnerships
  • Greater visibility of SCD through shared stories
  • Sustainable, culturally relevant outreach
Evaluation & Sustainability

Success will be tracked through event participation, donor registration data, and community feedback. A final report will guide future scaling of this work, supported by lasting partnerships and educational resources.
